Behind the Scenes – Interview with the Founders of CALM ELEPHANT

Tense back, stressed, poor sleep – that sounds like the standard diagnosis for modern life. Why do we all seem to lose our balance?
Corinna:
Because in everyday life we often just function. We sit too much, move too little, and constantly feel rushed. The body is under constant stress – regeneration and health take a back seat. Back problems, sleep disorders, or mood lows dominate our lives.
Joel:
And that's exactly where acupressure comes in. The method is over 2,000 years old, originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine. Mainly, it’s about activating the body's self-healing powers by applying pressure to certain points. That sounds esoteric at first – but it’s highly physiological. The stimulus on the skin causes the body to release happiness hormones like endorphins and oxytocin, improves blood circulation, and activates the parasympathetic nervous system. That means: calm down. Relax. Let go.

Some people turn to melatonin supplements or painkillers. What speaks in favor of an acupressure mat?
Corinna:
That it works completely without chemicals – and at the same time acts on several levels. Many users report that they can switch off better in the evening because the mat acts like a daily ritual. The body eventually recognizes this stimulus – and goes into a kind of relaxation mode. And those who lie on it regularly often feel more balanced and energized during the day.
Joel:
It also helps many after sports: muscle soreness, tension, sticky fascia – all of this can be alleviated through acupressure. It reduces stress in the body and thus gives the system the opportunity to repair itself.
Still, there have been many providers on the market. So why CALM ELEPHANT?
Joel:
Because we saw so much more potential in it. We wanted something holistic, relaxation from head to toe. When you lie flat on your back, you almost always form a hollow back. Especially the lumbar area then sags. No pressure, no acupressure – no effect. And that’s where CALM ELEPHANT comes in.

Corinna:
That’s why we, as a family business, sat down and developed our own functional sets together with orthopedists and physiotherapists. Our pillows are adjustable in height and firmness, supporting the lower back, neck, and legs under the knees. An ergonomic and personally individual solution.
So not just a product, but a system?
Corinna:
Exactly. We think in sets – and in needs. Not every body is the same. Our mats are made primarily of coconut fibers – comfortable, breathable, and natural. The covers are made of a linen-cotton blend, pleasant and skin-friendly. We fill the pillows with heat-retaining buckwheat hulls.
Joel:
And don’t worry about the spikes! What challenges you at first soon becomes a moment you look forward to. Sustainability for us means not only using natural materials but also creating a product you’ll still use in ten years. With us, everyone finds what they need, from beginners to particularly intense advanced users.
Who should benefit from the “CALM ELEPHANT” acupressure mat?
Corinna:
Anyone who wants to take their health into their own hands! Because let’s be honest: no one wants to be permanently dependent on therapists and would rather do something good for themselves in the familiar comfort of home. And if that’s possible by lying quietly on a mat for 20 minutes every evening? Then that’s a pretty good offer to yourself.
And how can such a set be used concretely in everyday life?
Joel:
The great thing is: it doesn’t require much time or a fixed place. Our users use the sets in very different ways – some in the morning right after getting up to start the day with a clear head and activated circulation. Others in the evening to unwind and sleep better.
Corinna:
Many also place the mat on the sofa or floor while watching TV or reading, others take the set to the office. Especially our 2in1 pillow is perfect for a little break at the desk as a foot reflexology massage and foot support. The set can be used exactly where you need it.
What other complaints can the acupressure mat help with?
Corinna:
Many – because tension and stress often manifest in very different areas. Many of our users report significant relief from headaches or migraines. By reducing stress hormones like cortisol, relieving neck and shoulder muscles, and stimulating blood circulation, pressure on the head can often be noticeably eased.

Joel:
Many also use the mat specifically for menstrual discomfort or inner restlessness – to help the body itself. The gentle pressure on the tissue not only relaxes the muscles but also calms the nervous system.
Corinna:
Another application area is treatment of complaints in the sacroiliac joint area such as ISG syndrome. Classic mats often lack targeted stimulation there. Our height-adjustable lumbar pillow can be individually adapted to apply targeted pressure while providing support.
Joel:
And what many underestimate: acupressure can also help with symptoms like lack of concentration or mental exhaustion. When the body is allowed to let go, the mind often calms down as well. You can work more focused, feel yourself better – and have more energy for the day.
